Our Story

Bringing the soul of Ethiopian coffee to the heart of Perth.

Welcome to Jebena Coffee Roasters ☕

Founded by Nebiat and based in Perth, Western Australia, our story is deeply rooted in the highlands of Ethiopia. Born and raised in the birthplace of coffee, Nebiat grew up with the understanding that coffee is far more than a beverage—it is a sacred tradition, a daily ceremony, and a powerful vessel for connection.

With over 10 years of experience in hospitality, Nebiat brings a rigorous focus on quality and customer experience to every batch we roast. We specialise in premium, single-origin Ethiopian coffee, small-batch roasted right here in WA to preserve the delicate floral, fruity, and complex flavours that define our heritage.

Thank you for supporting a local WA business.

What is a Jebena?

At Jebena Coffee Roaster, our name is inspired by the traditional Ethiopian coffee pot known as the Jebena — a handcrafted vessel formed from natural clay and created in a variety of shapes and sizes across Ethiopia’s diverse regions. More than a brewing pot, the Jebena represents hospitality, unity, and a coffee tradition passed down through generations. In a country rich with many languages and cultures, “Jebena” is a word understood everywhere — a timeless symbol that brings people together to share conversation, connection, and freshly brewed coffee.

The Story of Kaldi — Where Coffee Began

Our story reaches back centuries to the Ethiopian legend of Kaldi, a goat herder who discovered his flock dancing with energy after eating bright red coffee cherries. This serendipitous discovery birthed a global phenomenon, yet its soul remains in the Ethiopian highlands.

At Jebena Coffee Roasters, we honour this origin in every roast we produce in Western Australia. We don't just roast beans; we preserve the ancient legacy discovered by Kaldi all those years ago.

This is where coffee began. This is where our story begins.

The Traditional Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony

The Ethiopian coffee ceremony is an art form—a slow ritual of roasting green beans over an open flame, hand-grinding, and brewing in a jebena. It is served in three rounds, known as Abol, Tona, and Baraka, each symbolising an increasing level of connection and blessing.

This ceremony is the heartbeat of our brand. It reminds us that coffee is a gift intended to be shared and savoured with those around us.

Coffee isn't just something you drink. It's something you experience.
